Buying and caring for copper

• Solid, not plated. Unplated copper darkens into a patina with use — that is ordinary oxidation and a sign the metal is genuine. Plated brass stays bright and eventually flakes.
• Cleaning. Half a lemon dipped in salt, or a little tamarind paste, then rinse and dry. Avoid steel wool and harsh polishes.
• Bottles. Rinse and dry between refills, and clean the inside with the brush every week or two. Keep acidic drinks and citrus juice out of a copper bottle — water only.
• Worn pieces. Measure with a string and add about 1cm; ease an open kada to fit once rather than bending it repeatedly.

Why do copper items turn dark?
Copper oxidises in air and with handling. The patina is expected and lifts with lemon and salt or tamarind paste.

Does wearing copper treat joint pain?
No. Controlled trials on copper and magnetic bracelets have generally not found a measurable effect on joint pain. Wear one for the tradition and the look.

Can copper bottles go in the dishwasher?
No. Wash by hand and dry — dishwasher heat and detergent strip the finish.
