What to check before you switch

• Coir scrubbers — stiff enough for steel and cast iron, and they will not scratch. Rinse and hang to dry; a scrubber left sitting in water will go soft and smell.
• Bamboo toothbrushes — the handle is bamboo, the bristles are usually nylon and should be pulled out before composting the handle. Check the bristle material on the pack rather than assuming.
• Safety razors — a bamboo-handled double-edge razor takes standard replaceable blades, so the ongoing cost is a few rupees per blade rather than a cartridge.
• Coconut shell bowls and mugs — food-safe and light. Hand wash only; dishwasher heat cracks them.
• Recycled paper journals — check GSM if you write with ink pens; thin recycled sheets feather.
